Annika Kelly Strain Foundation

What is the ANNIKA KELLY STRAIN FOUNDATION?
The Annika Kelly Strain Foundation has been set up to assist the patients and their families of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology department at UCSF's 7 Long - where Annika spent so many of her days - be more comfortable during their stay in the hospital.

Our vision
While many foundations focus on research and finding a cure for cancer, we wanted to do something in memory of Annika that focused on the spirits and comfort of the young cancer patients at UCSF.

Our mission
The Foundation's mission is to provide hope and support to those who are touched by pediatric cancer. We want the Foundation to provide children who suffer from pediatric cancer a moment during their courageous battle when they can forget their illness and enjoy just being a child. The goal of the Foundation is to make the many days and weeks at UCSF as tolerable and enjoyable as possible for patients and their families.

How does the Foundation support UCSF's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department?
Through the efforts of volunteers and donations, the Foundation funds programs to make a difference in the lives of the very courageous kids that spend weeks and months in treatment in the Pediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant wards. Nearly 100% of all donations go directly to benefiting these children--both physically and spiritually.

Examples of the Foundation's Efforts

In honor of Annika's 4th Birthday in November, the Foundation treated the families and staff of 7 Long to refreshments including gourmet coffee, juice, pastries, cupcakes and other treats. We hope to make this a quarterly event.

°The Pink Satin Sashes holiday toy drive was a huge success; many children enjoyed the dozens of generous donations and the Child Life staff truly appreciated the overwhelming support.

°The Foundation is in the process of replacing all the VCRs (29) on the Pediatric/Oncology floor (7 Long) with new DVD/VCR combo units, so that the many patients can enjoy their DVDs from home as well as the expansive selection of VHS tapes currently on hand.

°The Foundation also intends to sponsor selected families. It is our hope to make small financial contributions to various families based on need and staff recommendations.

The Foundation has a few events planned for the next year, so please be on the look out for ways to participate in honoring Annika's memory.

Thanks, as always, for your support!!

Anna and Mike Strain
